12:  The Elements of Great Managing

by Rodd Wagner & James K. Harter, PH.D.

Read it? Take a look at the 12 Elements and find out what data shows is “great management”.

Book Summary

The Gallup organization has been collecting data on business success for many decades now. With over 10 million interviews in their database, they have been zeroing in on the characteristics of a great company. Much like Jim Collins’ groundbreaking book, Good to Great, the Gallup series utilizes data to show some surprising truths about companies that outperform their competition. This installment of the series is a follow-up to First, Break All the Rules, first released in 1999. It also compliments the Gallup’s Strengths Finder series which focuses on applying individual strengths.

“12” focuses on 12 common elements found in great companies as it relates to how managers manage their people. These 12 elements are written from the employee’s perspective, making them very easy to apply to any company. They are realities like “I know what is expected of me at work” or “At work, I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day”. The book then goes on to tell stories of how supervisors and managers can shift their company culture and management style to encourage more engagement.
While the elements may seem like “fuzzy” concepts, the study shows that engagement has a real impact on the business. Engaged employees average 27% lower absenteeism. Companies with engaged employees have 51% lower turnover at tremendous cost per employee.
Engagement even impacts safety with companies, with engaged employees having 62% less accidents than companies with disengaged employees. The bottom line is these 12 elements directly relate to the bottom line.
